Emma Smith

Dr Emma Smith is fascinated by how stories are told; her research looks at unconventional acts of storytelling and their effects upon readers. With the help of a UK Foundation for Canadian Studies travel award, she travelled to Ottawa’s national archives to consult the manuscripts of three Canadian women writers. Here, her white archivist’s gloves revealed fascinating and elusive truths about how the world of a novel takes shape, and about the often transformative role that readers, editors and publishers play in the collaborative process of telling tales. While working on her book project on narration in contemporary women’s fiction, Emma currently teaches postcolonial literature at Leeds Metropolitan University and sits on the committee of the Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Leeds.
